On the 16th January 1953, Mrs R. R. Todd, wife of the Secretary for Chinese Affairs, officially opened the new Nurses' Quarters at Tung Wah Eastern Hospital,
The new block is a very important addition to the hospital; not only does it provide modern amenities for the nursing staff, but its construction made available 80 more beds in the main building for the treatment of the sick. The nurses had previously been living on the top floor of the hospital in rooms which were ori- ginally intended as wards.
