THE BRABAZON HANGAR
The selection of a specification for the cladding of the roofs of the Brabazon Hangar presented a very complicated problem for the Architect, Mr. Eric Ross, F.R.I.B.A., and the Consulting Engineers, Messrs. Brian Colquhoun & Partners, because the conditions with which precise compliance was essential were unique.
In the first place, the cladding had to support regulation super-imposed loads over wide spans but itself impose the lightest possible load on the structure.
It had to possess the highest degree of insulation to minimise risk of undue thermal stress to the mass of steel framing forming the longest roof span in the world, 331 feet.
It had to have a completely sealed external surface in order to relate actual to calculated wind-pressure conditions.

turn is fitted to the main spindle. Thus all shock loads from the grinding wheel to the motor, as well as the thrust developed by the helical gears, are absorbed. The gearing, therefore, is self-aligning under all operating conditions.
As in all "Wolf" Machines, the greatest care is exercised in the selection and treatment of the materials used in their production. High tensile aluminium alloy for example, is used for the castings. The gears are machined from steel blanks with integral spindles. They are high-frequency heat treated by the latest equipment which provides teeth of uniform hardness and temper whilst retaining resilient cores.
The use of non-hygroscopic windings enable the Grinder to be used in extremes of temperature and humidity. Each machine is subjected to an insulation flash test of 1,500 volts.
As well as grinding, the GQ4 Portable Grinder is used for wire brushing, rust and paint removal, dressing steel and all types of metal surfaces. When fitted with a 4′′ diameter Calico Mop, the machine performs a wide range of buffing and polishing operations on all types of products manufactured from sheet metal.
