Sites have been set aside in Aber- deen Harbour for trades which cater to the needs of the fishing industry. Some ancillary industry is expected on Ap Lei Chau and an area for boat building has therefore been provided in Aberdeen Channel.
SCHOOL SITES
In addition to sites earmarked for schools to meet the needs of the estimated future population, provision has been made for open spaces and recreational areas, particularly in the residential zones.
The plan also reserves sites for public buildings such as Fire and Police stations, clinics hospitals and temples.
An important long-term proposal by the Town Planning Board is the construction of a road tunnel to im- prove communication and facilitate the movement of goods and people
between Aberdeen and the north side of Hong Kong Island,
The proposed tunnel, the construc- tion of which has not yet been approved by Government, would be about be about 1,800 yards long and, if built, would reduce the distance from Aberdeen to the Star Ferry to between 34 miles and 4 miles.
The Town Planning Board believes that if the development plan is to be fully implemented, it is essential to provide much improved road com- munications.
Apart from the proposed road tunnel, the Board also recommends improvement of the main through traffic route into Aberdeen by widen- ing and extending Wong Chuk Hang Road.
Several new roads, including two to connect Wong Chuk Hang Road with Brick Hill and Ap Lei Chau, are also recommended.
