waters. It will also help to relieve the present overcrowding at Cheung Sha Wan and in the Yau Ma Tei typhoon shelter.
Seawalls, Breakwaters
The seawalls and breakwaters to be constructed in this second stage of the development scheme will have a total length of about 11.000 feet. They will be built in varying depths of water down to 10 feet below mean low tide.
Parts of the seabed will be dredged to form the trench foundations for these seawalls and breakwaters.
When Stage II is finished, a third stage will complete the whole project.
The work in the third and final stage will involve the completion of the entire reclamation
Gin of Drinker's Bay.
It will include extending the ter racing work on the two headlands to develop the remaining useful areas. Quay walls will also be built within the new typhoon shelter in Rambler Channel.

The construction of overpasses to link the terrace roads with the new motor road. thus avoiding traffic having to turn right, will be carried out when required.
When the entire reclamation is finished. the main seawall, starting from Mong Chau. will be extended to join Pillar Island, which is now part of the growing isthmus formed by the refuse dump connecting it to the Texaco headland,
The development of Kwai Chung is only part of the works being car ried out in the twin towns of Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung.
At the moment work is already in hand to develop the foothills" in North Kwai Chung to provide land for housing purposes.
The area being developed is situated to the east of Castle Peak Road near the 7-milestone in the Tsuen Wan area of the New Ter- ritories.
The scheme calls for site forma- tion of about 90 acres of hilly ground. at an estimated cost of 322 million over

In addition, there will be three residential areas for private housing projects. a further housing area for industrial workers and two shopping
centres.
Ten acres of open space will be provided for recreational purposes while sites will be reserved for the construction of eight schools as well as for other communal purposes.
The first stage of the site forma- tion work is in progress and the first sites for building purposes are ex pected to become available early next
year.
Resumption of Land

Government has resumed 1.900.000 square feet of agricultural land and some 103,000 square feet of building land in the Kwai Chung Valley and around Gin Drinker's Bay in connection with Stage II of this scheme.

In negotiations with the New Ter- Litories Administration, the owners of the village hosues in Ha Kwai Chung were offered a formed site on which to rebuild their houses in an area adjacent to, but outside, the boundaries of the development scheme.
Every effort was made to ensure that the new village was laid out in accordance with the wishes of the villagers. An ancestral hall and a school are already under construction and a contract has been let for the building of the village houses. Much assistance is being given by the New Territories Administration in con- nection with the move.
All landowners whose land was subject to a resumption notice were offered the opportunity of surrender- ing their land in exchange for an undertaking to grant building land when available in the Kwai Chung area. subject to certain conditions. conditions. Most landowners took advantage of this offer.
