SINGAPORE AIR PORT GROWS

TO MEET GROWING PASSENGER DEMAND

INGAPORE will have a new M$3.600.000 passenger terminal building early next year to cope with the large increase of air traffic now being handled by the island's Paya Lebar International Airport.

Construction of this new terminal. third phase of the Airport's develop- ment programme. started last November and is expected to be completed by February next year.

The Singapore Deputy Prime Minister. Dr. Toh Chin Chve laid the foundation stone at a dedication of the new passenger ter- ceremony minal on 27 July.

The building has been designed to meet international specifications and the functional requirements of the Department of Civil Aviation. Provision for future extension by a lateral extension to the west of the present scheme is also planned,

The increasing importance of Singapore as key communica- tions and commercial centre in Asia has underlined the pressing need for the island to have a first-class ter- minal to augment the facilities of its international Airport.

Furthermore, the fact that Singa- pore will soon become the nucleus of commerce and trade in the new Federation of Malaysia has lent greater urgency to the need for a good airport terminal to handle the expected influx of more businessmen. industrialists. and tourists to the is land in the near future.

The present passenger terminal. with the inward and outward pas- senger movements all handled in one building block. is too small and ill- equipped to cope with the growth of air traffic through Singapore. The present growth is 20 per cent per annum compared to the world aver- age of six per cent.
