Telephone and power points are installed so that power or telephone outlets can be easily arranged from the centre of each 5 ft. bay without disturbing the partitions or decora- tions etc. Similarly if needed, the position of the ceiling lights can be adjusted neatly without disturbing the structure.
The various finishes have been selected to provide as far as prac- ticable permanent surfaces of pleas- ing appearance that are easily and inexpensively maintained. An at- tempt has also been made to incor- porate sound absorbent materials to the ceiling, walls, floors to reduce the noisy clatter some modern build- ings produce.
Many modern buildings in Malaya start their life pristine and glittering with their new painted concrete, brickwork and joinery. Unfortunate- ly some soon take on a mottled appearance with the growth of fun- goid staining. Careful selection of colours and materials together with the provision of ample weathering devices will, it is hoped, minimize the present austere appearance.
Malayan wood has been used in the building. Beautifully finished wooden blocks were extensively used for the flooring. Cut from the fine. kempas wood, about 50,000 square feet of square blocks were used, This cost about $50,000, which is half the sum allocated for flooring the building.
The roof is made waterproof with Mulseal waterproofing emulsion and concrete slabs.
The five-storey building was com pleted in record time less than nine months. The architect was Mr. Stanley P. Merer, of Booty, Edwards and Partners; consulting engineers were Steen Sehested and Partners. quantity surveyors were Frank and Vargesor; and main contractor the Yew Lee Construction Co. Ltd.
