Longitudinal section along the line of the new road illus- trating sections of main cuts and fills in comparison with the old road level at crossing points. The straight line rising from left to right is the line of the new road, while the levels of the old road are shown
at C47 and C53, near C58 and at C63. Roughly, the length of section illustrated is from Point D to just beyond Point 18 in the Key Plan.

The maximum gradient in the new road will be 1:14 and will be fairly evenly maintained throughout its length.--
During the course of construction approximately 170,000 cubic yards of cutting was done. The estimated cost of the new road is $375,000.00, of which $100,000.00 was spent on the section of Nathan Road between Prince Edward Road and Taipo Road junction, which is included as part of this scheme, and the balance of $275,000.00 from the junction to the Reservoir.
Of the construction of the road itself, it might be mentioned that the foundation is built up of 9" stone with a finished surface of tar-macadam. Part of the tar-macadam was mixed on the site but a good portion of this material was conveyed from the Tsat Tse Mui Quarry in Hong Kong. It was hoped, originally, to supply stone for this roadwork from the Hok-Un Quarry, Kowloon, still in course of erection, but owing to the difficulty of obtaining delivery of machinery ordered from Home, this was found to be impossible. All curbs and channels are generally of precast concrete.
The General Contractors for the project were Messrs.
Nam Hing Co., the contract time being eighteen months starting from February 1940. In spite of considerable delays due to excessive spring rainfall during 1940 and 1941, the completion of the work will not be very much behind time.
