REPORT BY COMMISSIONER FOR RESETTLEMENT PERIOD APRIL 1ST TO JUNE 30TH 1960.

A total of 4.441 persons (797 families) were cleared and offered resettlement. 43.80

of acres

land were freed for development and used for new roads, for road widening and drainage schemes, for a local officers' housing scheme, for a new Government school and for a new Police Station at Wong Tai Sin. 24 operations took place in Kowloon, rin Tsuen Wan, and 2 in Hong Kong. of these operations required the clearance of cultivation, and a total of $204.252.66 was paid as ex-gratia com- pensation for the 8.29 acres of cultiva- tion cleared.

MULTI-STOREY BUILDING

Jordan Valley Estate (5 'H' blocks and 9 single-wing blocks, 4,361 rooms; 2 blocks of 98 self-contained flats; I factory block of 285 working units): Three of the seven single-wing blocks of Stage II are now completed and the remaining four are under construction.

Chai Wan Estate (9 'H' blocks and I single-wing block, 4,480 rooms; factory of 390 working units): A con- tract has been let for the construction of the 6 'H' blocks and one single-wing block of Stage II.

Kwun Tong Estate (23 'H' blocks and single-wing block; 12,691 rooms): The 19 'H' blocks and I single-wing block of Stage II are now under con- struction.

Li Cheng Uk Estate, Stage IV (2 'H' blocks and 2 single-wing blocks, 1,267 rooms): The two final blocks are now under construction.

Tung Tau Resettlement Estate, Stage I (10 'H' blocks, 5,400 rooms): A con- struction contract has been let for these 10 blocks.

Tai Wo Hau Estate, Stage I (13 'H' blocks, 7,300 rooms; I factory block with 480 units): A construction con-

tract has now been let.

Cheung Sha Wan Factories Nos. 2 and 3 (1,010 units): Factory No. 2 is now under construction. A piling con- tract for Factory No. 3 is now being let.

Wang Tau Hom Estate

(25 'H' blocks, 11,084 rooms): Site formation is in progress.

At the end of the quarter, the total population of the multi-storey estates was 252,455 of whom 4,533 were living in the two and three-storey buildings in Shek Kip Mei Estate.

465 of the 467 units of space in the Resettlement Factory, Cheung Sha Wan have been let, and are occupied by 128 factories and workshops of various kinds. In the factory block at Chai Wan, 72 of the 378 units of space were also let to 11 factories and work- shops of various kinds. 263 of the 273 units of space in the factory block at Jordan Valley were also let to 83 factories and

workshops of various kinds.

Block 'O', Wong Tai Sin Estate and Block 'G' Jordan Valley Estate were completed. They provided a total of 388 bays (each 240 sq. ft. in area) including 55 bays on the ground floor.

COTTAGE

RESETTLEMENT

Chai Wan: The first batch of 39 cottages to the built by the Methodist Missions are under construction. Sites for the second batch of 19 cottages are being formed.

The 34 cottages being built by the National Catholic Welfare Conference are almost completed.

Chuk Yuen: 15 cottages built by the American Presbyterian Missions Case- work Centre were completed.

Ngau Tau Kok: The 118 cottages being constructed by the National Catholic Welfare Conference are almost completed and should be ready for occupation in the near future.

The registered population at the end of the quarter was 83,742, an increase of 1,260 from the previous quarter. 730 births and 57 deaths were reported.

14,678 premises in cottage resettlement areas, including 75 factories and workshops, 394 shops and 2,639 Government owned cottages.

SQUATTER CONTROL

The squatter patrols discovered total of 2,237 new structures or new extensions to old squatter structures. Of these 696 were removed by the owners after service of notice, while 1,541 had to be demolished by the patrols after the owners had failed to take action themselves.

Officers of the Rooftop Squatter Prevention Section encountered a total

of 558 new structures ог extensions to old structures. Of these 363 were dismantled voluntarily, while 195 were demolished by the patrols.

A total of 74 squatter structures occupied by 66 families totalling 293 persons were removed from rooftops as a result of redevelopment of the tene- situated. ments on which they were Alternative sites on the Cheung Sha Wan reclamation and at Model Village have been offered to these squatters and by the end of the quarter all 66 families had accepted the offer and constructed huts.
