NORTH

NEW CHURCH PLANNED FOR NORTH POINT

Architect: Mr. Robert Fan, B. Sc., B. Arch.

ORK is scheduled to start early next year on a Methodist church and Sunday school to be erected on a North Point, Hong Kong, site for the Board of Missions. of the Methodist Church.

With its irregular, narrow front- I.L. 7690 in Cheung age the site Hong Street presented initial design problems. All of these have been eliminated in the plan of archi- tect Mr. Robert Fan junior.

The church's base will be 30 ft. above street level, and the church itself will be visible from King's Road.

Provision has been made for retaining walls. and a minimum of cutting will be necessary.

Mr. Fan's concept is of an in- formal arrangement with the build- ing set back and full advantage taken of the natural lay of the land.

There will be four levels. and entrances have been planned so as to create an atmosphere of fellow- ship.

Full use will be made of the wider rear part of the site to enable an approach by way of a winding flight of steps from busy King's Road.

In envisaging this approach the architect was influenced by the pic- ture of congregations ascending to worship at L'Eglise du Sacre Coeur in Paris

a picture he has seen in actuality.

The entire building, with a bell tower a prominent feature, will be in reinforced concrete.

The Sanctuary, whose interior has been designed in simple Methodist style, will have a seating capacity of 500.

The Sunday School will take in children of all age groups.

Other offices will include the par- sonage and church workers' living quarters, a fellowship hall with kit- chen facilities, and the church office. Erection is expected to take about 10 months. Total cost will be about H.K.$570,000 (donation from Board of Missions of the Methodist Church in America).
