traffic on Collyer Quay during normal working hours deliveries of materials to site had accordingly to be made either very early in the morning or late in the evening during off peak traffic hours. Steel- work was stacked and carefully sort. ed at a site at Anson Road about one mile's distance from the build- ing site and mobile cranes used to load sections on lorries for delivery to site.

For the erection of Phase 2 steel- work a 7-ton electrically operated Guy Derrick crane was shipped to Singapore from the U.K. This is pro- bably the first time that a crane of this type has been used in Singa- pore or Malaya. This tool proved to be eminently suitable for the site.

and had the advantages that it did not create a smoke nuisance and was relatively quiet.

Crane guys were secured to column stubs and electric power was sup- plied by a 450 ft. long trailing lead. Stanchions were spliced at every third floor level approximately 35 ft. and the crane was raised at the same intervals.

Erection of Phase 2 steelwork totalling 954 tons was commenced on 26th July. 1958 and completed within contract time on 27th Decem- ber, 1958. The overall height of the structure is 225 ft. but 30'-8" of this is below ground floor level.

All site connections were bolted, small clearance holes being adopted

for stanchion splices. The steelwork was fabricated in the Glasgow works of Redpath. Brown & Co., Ltd. and shipped to Singapore from Glasgow. The standard of workmanship was excellent and at no stage in the con- tract was time lost through having to correct fabrication errors. Each section of steel was marked at the works before despatch in accordance with marking plans and all marks were clearly legible on arrival of the steel at site.

Steelwork erection was carried out by an expert team of local erectors under the supervision of a highly experienced foreman from Redpath Brown. Glasgow.
