It is not generally known that the Institute of Architects of Malaya hold semi-annual proficiency examina- tions for tracers and draughtsmen. This year the test for Junior Series (i.e. Tracer Grade II; Draughtsman Grade III and Tracer Grade 1 was held from July 18th- July 22nd when a record entry of 113 Candidates sat the examinations.
Of these, 51 Candidates were from Singapore and sat the examination in Singapore and 62 were from the

Federation and sat in fifteen centres spread throughout Malaya.
These examinations attracted candidates from the Municipality of Singapore; the Singapore Improvement Trust; the Singapore Government P.W.D.; the Malayan Headquarters and State P.W.D.'s; the Municipalities in the Federation; the Singapore Harbour Board; the Army and Air Force bases in Singapore and from the offices of the leading private architects in Singapore and through- out the Federation of Malaya.
All the papers were marked by the Examination Board in Singapore with the following results. Of the 82 candidates for Grade II Tracer 33 passed, 3 with Mention, and 49 failed; of the 28 Grade III Draughtsman 12 passed, two with Mention, 16 failed; and for Grade I Tracer, three sat, one passed and two failed. The percen- tage of passes was 41% of the entry. In 1947 in this same Series of 98 candidates examined, 72 passed and 26 failed, the pass percentage being 73% and in 1948, 23 passed and 54 failed or a pass percentage of 30%.
The Board of Examiners submit each entry to a most thorough scrutiny and considerable care is taken to ensure that a consistently high standard is reached before the Institute's Certificate is awarded.
These certificates are signed by the President and Honorary Secretary of the Institute and by all the members of the Board of Examiners.
The two illustrations shown on this page show the high standard of work reached by the candidates in these examinations. A third paper submitted by a candidate of a small bungalow was received but unfortunately the photostatic copy was not clear enough for reproduction.
Applications are now being received for the Senior Series of the Proficiency Examination (Draughtsman Grade II & I) and these will be held concurrently from December 5th-7th in Singapore and three or possibly four centres in the Federation.
We are indebted to Mr. W. I. Watson, F.R.I.B.A., Honorary Secretary Board of Examiners, for the informa- tions incorporated in this article.
