The granite memorial in the shape of a Pai Lau was erected at the top of the main Entrance steps by the Imperial War Graves Commission in 1928 to commemorate all Chinese in the services of the British Government who died through enemy action during the 1914-1918 war. An inscription in English was added in 1948 to include the Chinese who died loyal to the Allied Cause in the war 1939-1949,
The inscription reads as follows:-

TO THE ALLIED CAUSE IN THE WARS
OF 1914-1918 AND 1939-1945

The object of a shelter of this type is not to protect plants from the cold, but rather from the fierce rays of the sun and strong winds. A suitably constructed plant house with a free circulation of air and filled with a collection of exotic plants forms a delightful retreat to visitors during the heat of the day, in addition to affording the essential condi- tions for the cultivation of showy, tropical, shade-loving plants. Amongst the many kinds of plants grown here are: Orchids, Ferns, Palms, Coleus, and Begonias etc.
The construction of this shed is of light wooden members and can be adapted for similar buildings of much smaller size. The plant slat house reduced in proportion to fit into small or medium size ground should prove a never ending source of pleasure.
A Wire Fence is the neatest, most practical and least expensive defence of valuable Industrial and Private property against theft and damage by intruders.
