Variety has been achieved in the facade of the buuding in many ways, each of which, while combatting the monotony of mass and line which is inherent in a tall commercial struc- ture, increases the interest and emphasizes the supplementary details. The deep overhanging cantilevered canopy and large area plate glass windows to shops are surmounted by green veined marble, which is carried a further two floors above street level. This marble lends contrast to the "Salglaze" Auted terracotta tiles with which the upper part of the exterior is finished, and further contrast is achieved in the splaying of the angle at the corner of the building over the rounded marble base. This change of plane in the elevation of the building at the third floor level is an architectural device which, in this instance, serves to increase the apparent width of the frontage on Nathan Road, which is a very narrow one, and to improve the disparity of the proportions of the two sides of the building. Another method employed by the architect, apparently for the same purpose, is to emphasize the west and part of the south side by projecting vertical fins running the full height of the building from the third floor up. emphasis on the balance of the south facade is on horizontal lines, which has been achieved by means of projecting window canopies extending in full unbroken lines to the end of the building and joining each row of windows on that face.

The
The finish of the building deserves special mention. upper facing in "Salglaze" futed terracotta tiles are a design conceived by Sino-British Engineering Corporation
and executed by their principals in their factories. They are laid with broken joints and special corner sections are provided for the treatment of exterior corners and window sills. Mosaic floors on the ground floor were laid purposely in an extremely attractive jumbled design of a variety of colours, with mottled brown predominating. The wainscotting was done in black granite slabs brightly polished, which material was also used on the skirting and baluster in the main entrance lobby and in the secondary entrance. Polished travertino has been used for the interior of the main entrance and a special design of travertino ceiling comprised of concave sections provides the cove for diffused lighting. The stairs to the ground and first floors, including dadoes, were finished in travertino with black marble decorative strips and skirtings, the same treatment being employed for the corner entrance. All tiling of external walls were fixed with special waterproof backing and with waterproof pointing.
