NEW SANTA INFANCIA IN MACAO
A considerable amount of construc. tion work has been going on in Macao including new schools, sport's stadium and other buildings of a public ebar- acter. in addition to the large number of residential buildings.
A public building that has recently been completed which deserves special mention is the New Santa Infancia building for the Canossian Sisters. It has particularly impressive characteris ties of ecclesiastical design in keeping with the religious and humanitarian functions of a children's orphanage for which the building is intended.
The orphanage is situated in Mong Ha, at the junction of Rua Francisco Xavier Pereira and Rua Ovidor d'Arriaga, on reclaimed ground the nature of which required special treat-
ment of the reinforced concrete fram- ing. This framing had to be designed in four parts necessitating its division with three expansion joints. The dignified exterior of the building re- sulting from the positioning of the arched verandahs which is the prin cipal feature of the main facade is enhanced by the 1130 of imitation travertino finish for the walls. Set between the curving of the arch abut ments are circular plaques in white marble carved in a design representing the heads of little angels, a form of decoration which is particularly appro- priate for a building devoted to the care of children,
A clinic occupies the entire ground floor of the building where the children of poor and indigent parents receive

expert medical and surgical treatment. A consulting room flanked by two waiting rooms on either side, a room for the medical officer, an observation room and the X-ray room are on the right of the entrance hall. A small surgery and sterilizing room is placed at the end of the left wing of the building. Five ward dormitories for children, occupying the rear part, to- gether with eight separate small rooms in the left wing complete the accom modation on the ground floor.
The first floor is devoted to dormi- tories for the nuns which are set out in the wings of the building, while the refectories and a chapel occupy the centre portion contiguous to the main stair hall.
The second floor being of much
smaller area than those below allows for considerable amount of roof terrac- ing. The nurses' dormitory, dining hall and kitchen occupy most of this floor, which also contains a large linen room and a laundry.
The main entrance hall, which is set in the centre of the front part of the building, divides it symmetrically into two wings and is composed of two staircases leading to the upper floors. the stairs themselves being 7' wide aud finished in green and white terrazzo. The interior floors and walls are most- ly finished in terrazzo and tiles, parti- cularly the floors of the corridors and halls, in which pre-cast terrazzo tiles are laid. These tiles impart an air of cleanliness and brightness to the rooms, which effect is further enhanced by the ample window areas which, being made of steel, provide the maximum amount of light and ventilation. the interior doors and the furniture are made of teak wood and are French polished.
