sewer connections, and extensions totalling 3540 feet were laid including a 54" stormwater culvert for Kowloon Tsai Estates and over 5000 ft. of this piping were laid to serve land now being developed. Numerous works necessitated by reclamations, road im- provements, new Government build- ings, tunnels, etc. were carried out.

A survey of the sewers in Central district was commenced to ascertain the effect of the redevelopment of many sites by larger buildings, and the preparation of an outline scheme for the abolition of the no-W.C. area at Yaumati was continued. Culverting of the nullah in Argyle Street was com- pleted and the area occupied by the nullah will now be added to the carri- ageway.

ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL

OFFICE

In the Electrical Section, 2931 jobs were completed, 212 installation tests were made, 307 electrical installations were in hand, 3224 faults were repair- ed, 302 estimates were prepared and 264 electrical inventories were made out or revised.

New vehicles received in the Mec- hanical Section included 1 No. Com- mer Cesspool Emptier/Street Washing vehicle and 10 refuse vans for the Urban Council, 1 Crash Tender and 2 Water Tenders for Civil Aviation Department, 6 Nos. light Motorcycles for E. & M. Office, 1 No. Humber Super Snipe for the Commissioner of Police and 51 Pedal Cycles for Police Department, 10 Land Rovers for R.H.K.D.F., 2 Ford X-Ray vaus for Medical Department from U.N.I.C.E.F, and 2 Norton Motor Cycles for the Forestry Dept. In addition 13 Chassis for various departments were re- ceived, on which bodies will be con- structed locally. The construction of the six Police Troop Carrier bodies was completed and the vehicles de- livered to the Police.

Sketch plans for the new combined E. & M. workshops, office and stores were prepared by this office to show the layout required for the various

sections of the workshops. During the period under review 11,047 jobs were completed by the workshops.

PORT WORKS OFFICE

Repairs, alterations and improve- ments to piers in Hong Kong, Kow- loon and New Territories were con- tinued during this period.

Under the terms of the new Ferry Franchise, the responsibility for future. maintenance of Jubilee Street, Jordan Road, Shamshuipo, Mong Kok, Ton- nochy Road Ferry Piers was passed to the Hongkong & Yaumati Ferry Co., Ltd. on 1st March, 1951. Ar- rangements were also made to hand uver certain stores which would be used on these piers.

A light pier for use by ferries and general public was designed and com- pleted at Silvermine Bay, Lantao.

Dredging

A total of just under 100,000 cubic yards of material was dredged by the two units working at Yaumati, Mong Kok, Tai Kok Tsui, Cosmopolitan Docks, Holt's Wharf, Proserpine Reei and various piers.

Construction on the seawall for the North Point Reclamation is progress- ing satisfactorily and is about three- quarters completed. A further tract for the extension of this work will be let soon.

Work on the dredging and sand- filling of foundation tracks for the new typhoon shelter will be starting and a contract for the construction of the breakwaters is being prepared. Preliminary designs for quay walls, etc. for the Central Reclamation scheme are being continued.

Surveys

The surveying undertaken by this Department during this period include that for 11 permanent and 19 tempor- ary piers for renewal of leases and permits, sounding surveys and setting out plans for the new Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter, soundings and bor- ings in connection with the proposed Kai Tak extension and miscellaneous

hydrographic and land surveys and observations for other departments.

Airport

Drawings and estimates for the pro- posed extensions were prepared while normal repairs and maintenance work to piers, pontoons and roads were car- ried out. A new yard near the Port Works Office was built.

VALUATIONS & RESUMPTION

OFFICE

The following valuations were sub- mitted:

Total valuation for lease renewals for 22 lots amounting to $1,739,119; for resumption purposes, 2 lots valued at $857,000; 8 lots were valued for ex- change at $1,181,172; and 221 heredita- were valued for Estate Duty $11,721,400. Total valuations of property values for Government pur- pose, permit fees, fixed assets, removal of restrictions, depreciation funds, etc. amounted to $18,730,174.00.

WATERWORKS OFFICE

Total rainfall for the six months was 56.67 inches as against an aver- age of 34.88 inches. The maximum daily consumption of water reached 42 million gallons per day on 25th June on a 141⁄2 hours daily supply. Waste detection work started early in the year, and as a result 1719 repairs were carried out.

15,617 Meters were repaired and tested, 64,169 accounts for water con sumed were issued as well as 2939 demand notes for new supply.

New work included the laying of 51,046 feet of new distribution mains, the roofing of 52 static tanks in Kow- loon and Hong Kong, and the comple- tion of new filters at Red Hill.

Work was completed on the erec- tion of chloronome houses and atten- dants' quarters at Tai Po and Tsun Wan in connection with the automatic chlorination of water in the New Ter- ritories while investigations for pro- posed water supply at Ni Koo Chau and Cheung Chau Islands were carried out.
