Residents of the Col- ony who are concerned with the welfare of the servicemen will be pleased to know that a building is nearing com- pletion near Fanling which will cater to the comfort of Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen.
The grounds of the Institute are laid out on a lot of about 100,000 sq. ft. on the left side of the motor road to Fanling, about a quarter of a mile from the Fanl- ing railway station.
It is a centre for religious, recreational and social func- tions, planned primarily to meet the needs of the service men in the district. In the design of this Institute part- cular care was taken to suppress any suggestion of institutionalism and to keep the character of the building warm, welcome, intimate and relaxing. The approach to the main entrance has the friendly atmosphere of a private club.

The big stone fireplace centred on the north wall lends an air of hospitality to the place, while the snack counter located at the other end of the room is naturally the focal point of gusta- torial activity. While the lounge is primarily for social and recreational functions, religious services are regu- larly held therein, for which purpose a chapel is attached to, but separate from, the north side of the hall. This chapel doubles as a quiet room.
The lounge hall opens on to 2 spacious covered terrace to the south overlooking the grounds where tennis and basketball courts are laid out. On this terrace tables and chairs have been arranged which provide outdoor dining facilities during the fine wea- ther.
The building appears to be two storeys in height although actually only the east section contains two floors. In this part of the building the kitchen serving the snack bar, and the shower, washroom and lavatory facil- ities are located on the ground floor, while the first floor comprises a three- roomed suite for the resident warden. The stairway to this apartment is located through a private door from the service corridor off the lounge hall. There is also an entrance to the stair- hall at the rear of the main building. The apartment consists of a living room, bedroom, bathroom and fair- sized storeroom which is reached from the upper stair hall.
