It is the general impression that it is useless to attempt to apply a first class distemper finish to the walls of new buildings in Hong Kong, owing to the extreme damp which makes it necessary to dry out the walls thorough- ly over a long geriod of time before oil-bound painting work is attempted. However, the appearance of the interior of the Building Centre disproves most patently this belief. It is true, noue. theless, that if ordinary shell lime plas- ter is used for the wall finish, some time must be allowed to Iapse before proper painting work can be ateempt- ed. In the Building Centre, however, gypsum plaster was used for the walls
and ceilings, the material for which was supplied by the Green Island Ce- ment Co., Ltd., and within a few weeks after this work was completed, Halls' and Sissons' distempers, supplied by Messrs. Gordon, Woodroffe & Co. (Far East) Ltd. were used, both plain and stippled, resulting in a finish which is not only attractive, but provides a bright, washable and durable surface which will last for a long time.
On entering the first floor of the Building Centre the visitor finds him- self in a Bar-Lounge, the main colour scheme of which is in gray and red. The walls and ceilings are in a delight- fully cool monotone shade of dove gray with the floors in red stippled Arlon asphalt tiles relieved with a geometri- cal pattern in black and white. These tiles were
laid supplied and
by Getz Bros, & Co. Beyond the lounge are situated eight display booths placed on either side of a wide corridor which is floored with Semastic tiles of biscuit shade bordered with dark brown, which tiles were supplied and laid by Messrs Shewan, Tomes & Co., Ltd.
