EMBASSY IN DJAKARTA

THIS New office building for the

British Embassy in Djakarta was opened on August 1962.

The four-storey building, which accommodates about 100 Embassy staff, has been erected on a corner site at the intersection of two im- portant streets.

Construction work began in May 1960. Tenders were invited from local firms, but as the only one re- ceived was considered to be exces sive, the work was carried out entirely by direct labour. This was recruited locally and from Singapore and was under the supervision of the British Ministry of

of Public Building and Works staff. The building cost about £180,000 (HK$2,880.000). a considerable saving on the tender figure.

The building was designed to cope with the hot, sunny local climate. Windows face north and south to reduce sun penetration into the offices. Projecting vertical fins, overhanging slabs at the storey

levels. and horizontal sunbreakers in front of the windows provide further protection as well as

Existing trees, wisely left in front of the new office building for the British Ambassadorial staff in Saigon, shade and enhance the structure.
