WORK has begun on the first

stage of the Hong Kong Hous- ing Authority's fourth estate, the Choi Hung Estate off Clear Water Bay Road in the Kowloon City area, north of Kai Tak Airport.

When it is completed the Choi Hung Estate will accommodate over 43,000 people in 7,585 flats at a total estimated cost of $53,460,000, or approximately $1,225 per person.

The project, which covers 27 acres of ground, when completed with consist of eight "slab" blocks of 20 storeys each plus a series of connected lower buildings of seven storeys.

Each of the "slab" blocks will have 40 flats to each floor, including the ground floor, and will be serviced by three lifts placed centrally in the block. On each floor from the sixth upwards there will be "play areas' in each wing.

Each flat will have a living-dining room, a kitchen and a bathroom- lavatory. Some will accommodate four persons and some six, the area being based on an allowance of 35

square feet per person. Each flat will be a separate family living area and not a communal dwelling.

In the lower. seven storey buildings there will be larger. flats giving ac- commodation for families of eight, ten and, in small numbers, twelve. Provision is also made for shops on the ground floors of these lower buildings. Other portions of the ground floor will be left open for visual effect.

Two secondary and three primary schools, a post office and ancillary buildings for community use are included in the layout plan. These have been located as separate units and will not be built by the Housing Authority.

First phase of the project, on which site formation and piling work has begun. will consist of two of the 20-storey blocks with a total of 1.546 flats. This first section should should be completed in September

1962.
