Management in Civil Engineering by E.A. Parsons, D.M. O'Herlihy and R.H. Rowe. Spons Civil En- gineering Series. 150 pages. Price 42s.
Communications we are told are vital to industry and failure to or- ganise them properly can be costly. They are an essential part of manage- ment and their success depends large- ly on knowing where to communicate and with whom. In this book we have for the first time a clear state- ment of the organisation of a civil en- gineering contract, the spheres of duty of consultant, authority who lets the contract and contractor.
P.H. Ip Lo Wan Kwoot David Lee Tai Wai
The authors are men of wide ex- perience who have pooled this to write the book and what they say can be of great help to both the young and the older engineer engaged on construction work.
They describe employers and trade union organisations, planning of work (including industrialised building), or- ganisation of office work and control of staff, contract procedure, finance and costing.
These subjects are dealt with briefly but most essentials are covered. A good index assists the reader.
Ready Mixed Concrete by Ger- hard Grimm 8 in. x 6 in. 56 pages. Arbau, 69 Heidelberg, Postfach 160, Germany.
With the scarcity and expense of land for building, especially in the

larger towns and cities, where sites are being developed to their limits, the exclusion of a concrete mixing plant and the storage of aggregates and cement can greatly relieve the congestion on the site.
Consequently in many of these areas, as in Hong Kong, ready mixed concrete companies have grown up and must continue to expand.
The author's booklet is a very com- prehensive description of the complete 'ready mix' system based on German methods and plant. However it would have been helpful, if when translated, conversion had been given from the metric system. The con- crete qualities and mixes are also bas- ed on German standards and direc- tives are difficult to follow without the aforesaid.
