A panoramic view of the Pui O Valley.
The second step in my quest for enlightenment was naturally a visit to the island itself, and this I proceeded to do.
The usual and most convenient way of reaching Lantao at the present time is by means of the Silver Mine Bay Ferry, and on the bright sunny morning I chose for the trip I was fortunate in meeting an Engineer of the Waterworks Department of the P.W.D., who was on his way to survey the supply of stream water for the sites tentatively chosen for the first part of the scheme. I joined forces with him on our arrival at Silver Mine Bay at 8.30 a.m., after an hour and a half's run from Hong Kong.
Since the last ferry left at 4.00 p.m. and he wanted to get as much territory covered as possible, we set off at a great pace immediately we landed. As we walked through the paddi fields around Silver Mine Bay in a southwesterly direction towards the pass which led over the hills to San Shek Wan Bay, I had an opportunity of observing the extent of the agricultural land which was
already under cultivation and the acres of ground still available for settlement.
We soon reached the foothills and a steady climb at full speed eventually brought us to the top of the pass which was of considerable extent and appeared to be few moments more and we commenced our descent of ideal for a group of residences of the European type. A
the Pui O Valley which was almost a replica in size and topography of the one we had just passed through. The pathway followed the east side of the valley until almost half way down, when it crossed the stream and passed through and across paddi fields as it descended along the western slope. The valley widened considerably as we approached sea level until at San Tsun Village it stretch- ed for acres and acres along the shore.
We then scrambled along the rock strewn shore travelling westwards and at each stream we encountered a trip was made up its valley for the purpose of measur- ing the flow.
