floor itself. Sheet Rubber has been used, but in a great majority of cases trouble has arisen through the sheet blistering or creeping.
This difficulty was solved several years ago by Sin- gapore Rubber Works Ltd. who perfected a rubber tile vulcanized to a solid backing of asbestos cement by a special process. These tiles are called "CRESSONITE" after their inventor, Mr. L. Cresson.
The first installation of any magnitude in the Colony was in the Alhambra Theatre, Kowloon. Here floors, walls and staircases were finished in "Cressonite" Tiles and stair treads. This material has now been in place for a number of years and has proved, in spite of hard wear, in every way satisfactory from the point of view of appearance and wearing capacity.
After a period of quiet, the last six months have shown a considerable increase of interest in this specialty, and the following interesting installations have been carried out:-
Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Co., Ltd. two new express coastal steamers, "WING SANG" and “TAI SANG" have 210 and 256 square yards of tiling respectively.
The South Sea & China Bank have 180 square yards in their new premises.
The M. V. "ELCANO" for the Philippine Islands, depicted in the illustrations, has 550 square yards throughout the vessel.
The new Blue Funnel vessel "CENTAUR" also has a considerable area laid in her alleyways.
