Floor plans of the building paired off to show the relationship between the

duplex apartments,

In the words of the architect, "The main facade to Hysan is a strict geometri- cal pattern superimposed by a free colour pattern to release the colour (or the tem- porary decorative devices) from a mono- tonous regularity. It gives the elevational treatment variety and surprise."'

The verandah balustrades consist of solid concrete slabs extending from one vertical fin to the other, with an open space above the floor and below the rail. These balustrades are painted in solid, bold colours of red, white and dark grey. No attempt has been made to regularize the pattern of colour, and from a distance a blending of these colours results in varia- tions which take the place of the play of light and shade on architectural features conventionally employed in a building.
