SUSPENDED FLOOR
The Deadlock cavity floor added to the Cavco range, makes use of modular floor panels which rest on adjustable jacks with steel base plates and die- cast, cruciform-shaped supporting heads. Lugs on the cruciform heads slot into grooves in the base of each floor panel to ensure accurate align- ment, provide a positive lateral hold and prevent side slipping.
The jacks can give standard clear cavity heights ranging from 1-3/8 in. to 2 ft. (35 to 610 mm.). Each jack incorporates a 3 in. (76-mm.) height adjustment and a restrained, self-level- ling device that keeps its seating plane level within 0.07 in. (0.3 mm.) in 21⁄2 in. (64 inm.). Screws, bolts or adhesive

hold its solid-steel base to the sub- -floor, and a plastic finish on the cruciform head prevents vibrations and
resonance.
The 2-ft. square (610 mm.) panels of resin-bonded, birch plywood are in two thicknesses: 11⁄2 in. (38 mm.) for
heavily-loaded areas such as computer centres, and 4 in. (19 mm.) for general offices. They have a pressure-bonded finish of p.v.c., linoleum, carpet, etc., as required, and edges protected by an 1/8-in. thick (3.2-mm.) p.v.c. beading.
Although they are installed to a level varying by only 0.05 in. over 40 ft. (1.3 mm. over 12.192 m.), tole- rance between the panel tops is less than 0.028 in. (0.7 mm.), and each one deflects by a maximum of only 0.1 in. (2.5 mm.) under a 1,000-lb. (453.6-kg.) load. An optional foam seal renders the system air-tight, suct- ion or hook-adhesive pads being used to lift the panels.

to 25 ft. (300 mm. to 7.62 m.), making the standard equipment suit large or small installations and, where required, beam length can be increased to 35 ft. (10.67 m.).
The control unit's output contacts can be used to operate alarm bells or hooters, remote signal lamps, a strip- chart recorder, a remote percentage- obscuration meter, etc.
The control unit is housed in a pressed-steel case fitted with a lock- able, hinged door. A meter, reading 0-100 per cent obscuration and having an alarm-point indicating cursor, is mounted on the door, to- gether with an alarm-muting switch and two indicator lamps, green in- dicating "normal" and red "alarm" conditions. Four setting controls, zero percentage obscuration, fine setting, alarm set-point and a 3-position selec- tor switch, are located on a printed- circuit card mounted on the inner face of the door. The alarm-muting switch allows the alarm bell to be silenced while smoke emission is reduced to a permissible level and, once corrective action has been taken, the alarm will again sound automatically until the The makers are 3M Company, Wig- muting switch is returned to the nor- more Street, London, W.1.

Ribbonseal is said to be ideal for bedding and glazing glass or sealing aluminium doors and windows. It has good resistance to mild chemicals and general weathering, and does not em- brittle.
SMOKE METER
The Model SD 4 photoelectrically- operated smoke density indicator and alarm, works by measuring the ob- scuration of a light beam by smoke in a chimney stack or other smoke duct.
A stabilising network included in the control circuit renders a constant- voltage transformer unnecessary, and the need for expensive screened cable between the control unit and projec- tor, normally used with this type of equipment, has been eliminated. By connecting the receiver direct to the
Projector and receiver units are housed in identical cast weatherproof cases provided with purge holes to retard sooting up. The projector cast- ing houses a low-voltage lamp and reflector, which can be adjusted for alignment purposes, and the receiver contains a cadmium sulphide photo- resistive cell. The control-unit casing is designed for surface or flush panel mounting, and the projector and re- ceiver are usually bolted to mounting tubes.
