Singapore planning second airport

A second jumbo jet airport with a runway extending into the sea, like Hong Kong's Kai Tak, is being planned in Singapore. A feasibility study for constructing the airport at Changri Point is now under way. When completed, its recommendations will be submitted for Government approval.

A recent report by UK consulting engineers, Scott & Wilson, Kirkpatrick and Partners, envi- saged that Singapore would need three airports of jumbo jet size by the 21st century. It recom- mended a second airstrip at Paya Lebar, running parallel to the existing one.

But Government planners favour the Changri Point site where noise would be kept away from populated areas and land for the runway could be reclaimed from the sea. Arrivals at Changri could make use of the new coastal highway through Bedok.

Housing estate for 38,000

One 12-storey and one 20-storey block, and a 24-classroom estate school, have now been complet- ed at the Hong Kong Government's Wong Chuk Hang low cost housing estate at Aberdeen. The

buildings are occupied by about 4,000 people.

Eventually the estate will provide homes for 38,000 when it is completed by the end of 1971. There will be five 12-storey blocks, five 20-storey blocks and three estate primary schools. Other amenities will include playgrounds, welfare facili- ties, vegetable stalls and shops.

Tenders have been called for the remaining eight buildings and two schools and work on them will begin shortly. Total cost of the estate is estimated at HK$37.3 million.
