HONG KONG's Fire Services De- partment has in hand a large-scale ex- pansion programme to cope with the need, created by the colony's rapid population growth and property devel- opment, for more firemen and im- proved fire fighting facilities.

As part of this programme the de- partment has recently completed a new fire services training school in the New Territories which is presently by far the largest in S.E. Asia.

The school, erected on an eight- acre hillside site along Fan Kam Road near Sek Kong, combines with it the New Territories district headquarters, the Pat Heung fire station and the Pat Heung ambulance depot.

Being on elevated ground the site, facing south-east and overlooking the Sek Kong airfield, has no large flat area. But space for future construction and drill and parade grounds has been provided by cutting deeply into the hillside. Some 80,000 sq. ft. of parade grounds have been laid out and ad- ditionally reinforced to withstand the heavy loading and traffic of the fire fighting vehicles. To give vehicular ac- cess to the site a stream course in the north-east of the area had to bridged.

It was necessary to sink a deep bored well on the site to get drinking water as there is no mains supply to the area and flushing water has been obtained by impounding water from the stream and pumping it to reservoirs
