is 12ft. and between accommodation floors 10ft. 6in. Balconies cantilever 8ft. from the main facade at the dom- estic flats and lower floor lounges, with- out breaking the lines of the buildings; the beams form the ballustrades.

Although each room, apart from the bowling alley and main hall, is ventilated by individual air-condition- ers, there is no unsightly projection of these units on the exterior. They are set back into recesses above each aluminium window frame.

Internally the decor is generally of simple and economical materials. with plastered and painted walls and teak parquet flooring. Hammer dressed concrete is featured in the main hall and in the chapel, where daylight from side windows is filtered through multi-coloured plastic diffusers, simu- lating stained glass. The main staircase has heavy solid timber ballustrades reminiscent of early ship designs.
