Fan-shaped church fits odd site
A SOURCE of a good deal of local criticism because of its brilliant sky blue exterior walls, the new St. Joseph's Church in Garden Road, Hong Kong, is unusual from several aspects its shape, its layout and its dual modernistic spires.
On plan the church is fan-shaped, though this is not apparent from any external angle because of the steep fall of the surrounding land.
The fan shape was determined by two factors. First it fits neatly into the north end of the narrow and irregularly shaped site, giving a short main access from Garden Road and freeing the remainder of the site for use as courtyard and car parking space. The north end location was also the most advantageous so far as lighting and acoustics were concerned. In the near future the southern boundary of the site will meet the new Kennedy Road flyover, while the eastern boun- dary will be lined by a new road,
