Churchill College, Cambridge. Architects: Richard Sheppard, Robson and Partners. The college is laid out with an irregular open space surrounded by the residential blocks, each of which consists of small and large courts linked together, the small courts being paved and the larger courts grassed. The focal point of the college is the communal buildings with a first floor dining-hall, seating 360, with a high barrel-vaulted roof, which dominates the group. Beneath is a large common room with bar, shop, coffee and snack bar. The residential blocks, which are two and three-storey, have rooms arranged off staircases which can all be reached under cover from any part of the college.

RIBA's 1968

SEVEN buildings in England and one in Scotland have been selected for the Royal Institute of British Archi- tects' awards for 1968. A local author- ity housing scheme, a regional airport, two schools and four university build- ings make up this year's award win- ning entries.

St. Paul's Cathedral choir school, Architects: Architects' Co-Partnership. This boarding school for 38 boys needed to be in scale both with the cathedral's east end and the Bank of England's post-war building to the east. The facing materials used echo those of the cathedral and the deep set verticality of the strip windows echoes the verticality of the twin pilaster theme on the cathedral. much of the site is sunk below pavement level are sandblasted concrete. Construc- tion is generally in situ reinforced concrete. The stone faced concrete walls run continuously through the heights of the buildings and the exposed floor slab edges are lead faced.

Andover Town development Area 11. Architect Hubert Bennett. Area 11 is an estate of 353 low-rise houses with a segre- gated circulation system. Courts are arranged in pairs of 10 to 12 houses of two and three storeys which open towards each other. Traffic moves on an outer ring road and can enter the estate by two culs-de-sac.
