The reinforced concrete aprons, which will support the culverts and also the seawall at the seaward side, each weigh 75 tons. There are also pre- cast reinforced concrete shield walls, each weighing 48 tons, which will be positioned at each side of the seven intake culverts to retain the rubble mound, and finally seven precast rein- forced concrete seawall bases, each weighing 58 tons, which will span over each intake to form the base for rein- statement of the seawall.
―
Before dredging was started, piles were driven under each of the intakes with a cut-off level at 15.00 ft; the space of approximately 9 in. between the top of piles and the underneath side of culverts will be filled with grout by injecting it through the grouting pipes cast into the bottom of each
culvert immediately above the piles.
Each circulating water pump will deliver 73,500 g.p.m. of seawater to the condensers of its respective turbine sets, through a 60 in. bore prefabricat- ed steel pipe embedded in reinforced concrete. The entire equipment of the screen house, such as sluice gates, ro- tary
screens, auxiliary pumps and chlorination dosing, is automatic with main controls from the control room.
Construction plant
For erection of the power station, modern construction equipment is be- ing used to achieve efficiency and eco- nomy. This equipment includes two Butter's derrick cranes mounted on 120 ft. high gabbards and equipped with 150 ft. long jibs capable of lifting 35 tons and 25 tons respectively at
120 ft. radius. There is also a Coles Gargantua truck mounted crane cap- able of lifting 50 tons, or 81⁄2 tons with extended 176 ft. jib.
Another large crane on the site is the Pingon tower crane with 163 ft. jib designed to lift 2,8 tons at 163 ft. or 12 tons at 40 ft. to a height of 180 ft. All these cranes have fully automa- tic electronic controls and the latest safety devices with push-button con- trols in the operator's cabin.
The erection of the Tsing Yi station commenced in July 1966.
Overall design and construction is by China Light and Power Co. Ltd. Sub-contractors employed include: Gammon (HK) Ltd., site formation; Franki Piling Ltd., piling; Redpath Dorman Long Ltd., steelwork; and Tileman (Aust.) Pty. Ltd., chimney.
