Mural design competition
Artists in Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia may compete in a design competition to be held by Malaysia-Singapore Airlines who are seeking a large mural to grace the entrance lobby of their im- posing headquarters building in Singapore. Prizes of S$4,000, $$2,000 and S$1,000 are offered for the three entries considered best.
MSA has announced that the theme of the mural is open; it may be abstract, symbolic or figurative. Designs must be submitted as a coloured sketch, 36in. x 24in. The medium may be oils or acrylic paint, on canvas or other material.
Implementation of the public aspects of the plan depends upon the provision of the necessary funds by the Finance Committee, but money has already been voted to meet the cost of acquiring property in the general Urban Renewal District where redevelopment would lead to a repetition of the badly lit and inadequately ventilated buildings fronting on to narrow lanes or internal courtyards, inaccessible to fire engines.
Funds have also been provided for the rede- velopment by the Government of 13 acres of land between Hollywood Road and Queen's Road, chosen as the Pilot Scheme Area within the urban renewal district. Detailed planning of this project is now advanced.
The draft plan zones over 87 acres in the north of the district for either commercial or residential development or a combination of both. The small- er lots could be combined to provide larger sites suitable for comprehensive development.
Provision is made for an additional eight acres of open space, bringing the total to 13.41 acres, but a major part of the planning area, over 59 acres, is zoned for residential use.
Government, institution and community zones
Entry forms are available at MSA Offices. The take up 31 acres. There are already four markets in closing date for entries is July 31.
