Shell roofs being very sensitive to settlement and the site being on new- ly reclaimed ground, both markets are completely founded on piles. For the fish market a total of 119 Franki piles were sunk, to depths up to 75 ft.

The central tower block of four storeys is designed to allow for an additional floor at a later date. It is of conventional beam and slab rein- forced concrete construction and has a floor area of 14,000 sq. ft.

The lighter shade of plaster has been applied to the concrete breakers which extend from the ex- ternal walls, accentuating the vertical lines.

Open Space

Accommodation along two sides of the ground floor comprises a cold store and air lock, ice store, engine room, carpenter shop, and lavatories. Beneath the central tower block are the manager's office, a general office, auctioneer and business section and a buyers' room. These rooms occupy about 10 per cent of the total cover- ed area. The remaining 90 per cent is of clear open space divided into two sections with wire mesh screen. the front section being the sorting floor while the rear section is the auc- tion floor.

On the other floors of the tower block the accommodation is as fol- lows: First floor

account section and stores: second floor confer- ence rooms and recreation roof: third floor staff quarters.

In order to facilitate the landing of fish, two reinforced concrete piers have been built at the waterfront of the market so that the larger fishing vessels can moor alongside without difficulty. The piers measure 80 ft. by 25 ft, and have an 8 ft. draft at low water.
