aluminium foil with a backing of bitumen saturated fibre felt. It is produced in strips, 3ft. by 70 ft, and weighing 19 kg.

Golden roofing is copper foil with the same backing. It provides an at- tractive final layer in built-up roofing on public buildings. Strips of the same size weigh 20 kg.

Ltd., Kirkcaldy, Scotland, is manufactured by a unique process.

Crestaclear tile by Nairn-Williamson

It is composed of fine chips ог granules of coloured vinyl totally im- mersed in transparent polyvinyl chloride binder. This gives a luxuri- ous three-dimensional effect.

The tiles are being produced in 2.00

mm. thickness and two sizes, 9in. X 9in, and 12in. x 12in.

They can be laid on any smooth, dry, sub-floor, are quiet to the tread, and have great resistance to wear. They are flexible at 75°F. and can be bent round a mandril of in. dia- meter. A range of 16 colours is

THE lig L-CRF power roof ventila- tor comprises a low-silhouette, wea- ther-tight housing which contains

backward curved aluminium airfoil- type centrifugal fan and a direct- connected electric motor.

For ventilator sizes up to L-CRF- 100 at 1,100 r.p.m., the motor is of the shaded pole type, single-phase, with permanently lubricated ball bearings. For ventilator sizes be-

1,650 r.p.m., the motor is of the perman- ent split capacitor type, single phase. Both types are available for 115 or 230 volt operation.

To prevent overheating, suction pressure produced by the fan wheel backplate fins draws a steady, low- velocity stream of outside air through the motor compartment. The motor compartment is completely separat- ed from the exhaust air stream.

The bell-shaped housing is of aluminium.

ILG Electric Ventilating Co., 2850 North Pulaski Road, Chicago, Ill., USA, are the manufacturers. Their

SOUND METER

New Aid to Acoustic Measurement

PHILIPS new

sound level meter, type PM6400, is completely transis- It torised and weighs less than 6lb. may be used in the laboratory or on site.

An omnidirectional moving coil microphone is fitted at one end of the instrument and sound level is in- dicated on a moving coil meter cali- brated from 7 to +10dB. Sockets are provided for the connection of a recorder or a filter unit.

Sound level meter, PM6400

The instrument covers the range 33 to 130dB. Accuracy at 1kc/s, and with the unit at right angles to the source of sound, is plus or minus IdB. Power is supplied by two nickel cadmium cells which provide 20 hours operation before requiring charging.

Dimensions are 13 × 4 × 34in.

An octave band filter, type PM6410, for use with the PM6400, converts it into a portable sound analyser.

AIR CONDITIONER

Works on Evaporative Principle

A PORTABLE air conditioner, the Executive, which will condition a room as large as 2,000 cu. ft. is now available from

+

Hygro Robot Ltd., 68 Oxford Street, London, W.1.

Working on the evaporative principle, it will increase the stan- dard of comfort in rooms already conditioned by a refrigerated sys- tem. Stale air drawn in by a fan is washed and forced under pressure against the side of a zig-zag filter with an effective length of 5ft. 4in.

Executive unit

The construction of the unit al- lows the humidified air to pass through three pressurising stages be- fore being released, clean and with the correct moisture content for optimum comfort. Impurities are eliminated by the filter, but because the humidified air is not forced through the filter unit, the system is self-adjusting and cannot over- humidify.

A seven-pint water tank is fitted, requiring one filling every four days. Power consumption is 20 watts. Where disinfection or deodorisation is required, water soluble chemicals may be used.

The makers are to export the unit to South East Asia but have not yet appointed agents here.
