SHEARGRAPH

Determines Soil Shearing Resistance

SOIL shearing resistance can be quickly measured with a new por- table instrument, called a Soil Shear- graph, produced by Soiltest, Inc., 2205 Lee Street, Evanston, Ill., USA.

The instrument consists of a cali- brated spring and a recording pen attached to a shaft containing

shear head and handle. A recording drum, mounted above the spring and around the shaft, holds the chart paper.

When the

operator places the shear head in the soil to be mea- sured, he presses down and applies torque. The shearing resistance of the soil causes the spring to twist torsionally, producing relative mo- tion between the pen and reducing relative motion between the pen and recording drum. A graph of the test results is recorded on the chart.

Soiltest repreentatives are Benitez and Co., Inc., Manila; International Engineering Co., Bangkok; and Wil- liam Jacks and Co., Hong Kong.

PRIMER

Can be used on Damp Surface

FOR successful protection of iron and steel-work by paints, the surface should be free from millscale and rust. In practice this standard of preparation is difficult to achieve.

76

General practice is to allow struc- tural steel-work to weather in the atmosphere for some months, there- by producing a mixture of rust and residual millscale. The surface is then cleaned using wire brushes and scrapers. Where heavy rusting has taken place, even after thorough wire brushing all rust cannot be removed, and its presence can re- duce the efficiency of conventional metal primers.

A new penetrating primer, Lexide, made by Blundell, Spence & Co. Ltd., Hull, U.K., is designed for use under such conditions, where pre- paration is likely to be inadequate.

The medium in this primer is designed to do three things, to penetrate and bind residual rust, to allow the primer to be used on a damp surface and thirdly to provide extra protection, since it contains a special surfactant with corrosion inhibiting properties. The colour is red oxide lightened by the inclusion of flake aluminium pigment which gives water resistance through the leafing action of the aluminium particles.

The product is suitable for ap- plication by brush or roller and can be recoated in 16 hours. One gallon covers from 60 90 sq. yds.

AUTOMATIC DOORS

Sliding Panels May Be

Swung Open

A

BREAKAWAY mechanism on a new line of Auto-Slide automatic sliding doors makes it possible to swing the door panels open in emer- gencies with an exertion of less than 15 lb.

The doors, designed by the Door Operating Equipment Division, The Stanley Works, New Britain, Conn., USA, have narrow, trip-proof thresh- holds with

no grooves or tracks. They slide open quietly to provide unobstructed openings from 2 to 8 ft. wide.

For additional

convenience the

Auto-Slide automatic doors

doors may be easily held open manually or may be mechanically held in fully-opened position by a built-in lock-open device. Door jambs are equipped with neoprene finger guards, and the sliding speed is adjustable.

Available in five double-door and four single-door models, the doors provide a complete installation pack- age: extruded aluminum door frames and carriers, steel door track, pneumatic "Magic-Door" operator and controls, and, where required. entrance rails and carpet molding.

Agents for Stanley include: Hong Kong Robertson, Wilson and Co., Ltd: Malaysia Borneo-Malaya Representatives, Ltd., Singapore 1; Thailand Diethelm and Co., Ltd., Bangkok; Philippines Wm. H. Rennolds Co., Inc., Manila.
