reduces the concentration of vertical circulation (significant in an eight- storey building with this population).

The lecture theatre block has three theatres, one above the other. Each has a stepped floor, with 150, 195 and 240 seats respectively. theatres are entirely artificially lit and ventilated, to provide an undisturbed environment. The amount of illu- mination may be controlled at each lecturer's bench according to quality of the slides and films being projected and the need for note-tak- ing.

Individual upholstered tip-up seats with tip-up writing palettes, imported from Australia, allow for easy access to the tiers of seating. Each theatre has its own large preparation room accessible from the teaching end, and a demonstration bench. The projec tion screens are electrically operated.

Laboratories

The form of the top six floors of the main building is generally iden- tical in layout, with a large student laboratory the full width of the build- ing at one end, and the smaller laboratories, professors' suites, and staff rooms at the others. The third floor, being administrative in function and containing the laboratories for inter-departmental research projects, is partly sub-divided to a different plan. Other features of these main teaching floors are isotope labora- tories, refrigerated laboratories, and museums for anatomy and social medicine.

Below ground level, but with the advantage of sloping ground, are two semi-basements. The first accom- modates the animal house, work- shops, and the controlled tempera- ture unit. The second contains the cadaver store and an under-building car park.

The animal house is complete in itself, with its own food stores, animal food kitchen, cage washing room, isotope room, and operating theatre. It has easy access to the outside as well as to the remainder of the building. The animal rooms are air-conditioned.

Cadavers are stored in formalin tanks, which are lined with glazed tiles (as are the wall surfaces), and covered with hinged timber lids. The refrigerated system of preservation recommended by the Inter-University Council could not be considered, be- cause of the cost of storing the large number of subjects available in Hong Kong storage is provided for 150

cadavers.

Space Standards

The accommodation was planned to the space standards laid down by the United Kingdom Inter-University Council for Higher Education Over- seas, to whom the plans were sent for comment. While the general areas and arrangements were satisfactory, in their report some suggestions were made for the inclusion of spare
