27-storey Tenrikyo Building at Sapporo
ment will contain banks, shops and parking space for 187 cars.
Takenaka, the contractors, have recently start- ed the construction of two other high-rise build- ings. In Sapporo, Hokkaido, they are erecting a 20-storey building for Sumitomo Life Insurance Co., part of which will be occupied by a hotel.
In Yokohama, a 27-storey building is under construction for Tenrikyo, a religous group. This project employs a noiseless, vibration-free method to set up the basement walls. Continuous ferro- concrete walls are built by pouring mixed concrete into deep cavities dug by a special excavator.
The method, called TWB (Takenaka Basement Wall) is applicable to any type of soil and does away with sheet-pile driving in framing a basement structure.
Compact telescopic house of aluminium
A portable house of three rooms, kitchen and bathroom that can be erected in less than an hour and comes in four sizes, has been introduced by a Swedish metal products firm, Svenska Metallverken.
Dubbed the Essem Telescopic House, the alum- inium construction can be used either as a home, office, schoolroom, laboratory or clinic. It is sim- ply folded up into container form, moved to its new site, and set up on a 30 cm. thick gravel foun- dation and a bed of impregnated sleepers.
