to go through the five lower commer- cial floors. By this arrangement the functional and aesthetic needs of the office and shopping floors and the apartments are met.

caisson piles carried down to solid bedrock. The external surface of the building is a combination of glass mosaic tiles and Italian marbles.

Air Conditioning

The offices and shopping arcades are entirely air-conditioned. Each floor, for air-conditioning purposes, has been divided into nine zones, each zone being complete with its own air- conditioning plant consisting of supply air fans, air filters, cooling battery and in some cases electric heaters. Ther- mostats automatically keep the tem- perature of the various offices and shops constant.

A total of 43 air-conditioning plants are installed and are fed with a chill- ed water supply from a central plant in the basement. This plant com- prises two Hitachi centrifugal ma- chines, each capable of providing 300 tons of air conditioning. The ma- chines are fully automatic and vary the cooling output according to the heat load changes. A third standby machine of 30 tons capacity is also installed.
