Eventually, work proceeded at a rate of two segments a week until 10 segments on each side had been completed. Then, with the aid of suspended scaffolding, the 10ft. 6in. long centre section was constructed.
Apart from piles and foundations, white Portland cement was used for the entire structure. Expanded shale was the main aggregate for the light-weight concrete.
Deformations of the cantilever arms conformed with the calculated values. When the 14-ton travelling form- work carriage was dismantled the resulting load reduction on the cantilevers caused a 4cm. rise on each side, bring- ing them to within 3mm. of their theoretically correct level. The overall result shows that the design assumptions with regard to modulus of elasticity, shrinkage and creep. for lightweight concrete made with expanded shale aggre- gates, were quite reliable.
Designed by Dr. Ing. Gerd Lohmer, the bridge was a gift to the city of Wiesbaden from Dyckerhoff Zement- werke AG to mark the 100th anniversary of the company. Dyckerhoff and Widmann KG were the contractors.

Britain's new University of Sussex at Brighton has grown from an enrolment of 52 students in 1961 to 3,000 last year. Standing in 200 acres of parkland at the foot of the Sussex downs, the University has as its centre the 'Great Court' grass area surrounded by many separate buildings, all designed or supervised by Sir Basil Spence.

These photographs show the University Meeting House (top) and the Arts Building (stage 1). The meeting house contains a chapel and a series of rooms in which students can read, meditate or enjoy quiet social gatherings. The roof is a 21⁄2 in. concrete shell covered in copper externally and cast on light gauge expanded metal sheets. Walls are of concrete blocks in unreinforced concrete, cast with a horizontally board marked finish. German 'antique' coloured glass is set into the blocks using vacuum handles.
The Arts Building has two concrete monoliths reaching upward to symbolise the growing University. theatres immediately beyond the entrance hall create, with The two lecture Falmer House, a major axis across the Great Court, about which the natural features, terraces and courts build up in a free though balanced composition.
