JOHNSON'S HEAD OFFICE

L

IKE many other American indus- tries, Johnson's Wax has founded an establishment in one of the member-countries of the Euro- pean Economic Community (EEC). It has chosen Mijdrecht, in Holland, formerly a smallish agrarian town, but now a growing industrial area.

The plant head office which has a pronounced character aiming at re- presentation, is shaped like a boom- erang with arms of 53 m. At the ends the width is about 2 m. tapering to a round nose, and in the middle the width is about 20 m.

The building rests on five single piers with spans of 27 and 22.84 m.

and with a cantilever of 13.5 m. out- side the outer piers for both arms. The supporting construction consists of a beam grillage with a central beam. 1.5 m. wide and having a depth between 0.56 m. and 2.5 m., two edge beams of 0.25 m. wide, 0.56-2.5 m. deep and six diaphragms, with vary-

ing widths, depths and lengths. for each arm.

All these beams are prestressed with V.S.L. (Losinger) cables 2107 mm. The most remarkable feature of this building, which is placed in an artificial pond, is the very special ar- chitectonic design.
