CONCRETE SOCIETY VISIT
THE British Concrete Society has announced details of a visit to inspect various construction projects in India, Hongkong and Japan this autumn.
The society's party will arrive in New Delhi on October 27 for a four-day stay. Visits will be made to projects in the city and also to Chandigarh New City and the Taj Mahal. From there they go on to Hong Kong for a five-day visit to inspect a number of large housing re- settlement projects, two new towns and the Ocean Ter- minal, Kowloon.
In Japan, where they stay for seven days, the group's visit will coincide with the 13th World Road Congress organised by the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses. Visits will be arranged to important concrete buildings designed by leading Japanese architects. Major engineering projects such as Tokyo's expressway, the monorail to Tokyo Airport and the new Tokyo under- ground railway also will be inspected.
CIRCUIT BREAKERS IN FACTORIES
HONGKONG Government is installing circuit breakers in resettlement factory buildings to prevent general power breakdowns in future due to overloading of electricity supply to individual premises.
Widespread overloading of the electricity supply to individual factory units has led to frequent breakdowns in supply to entire resettlement factory blocks, giving rise to serious problems of maintenance and administration and causing serious inconvenience to tenants.
The installation of circuit breakers in individual fac- tory units provides a remedy to this situation, says the Government, as the equipment is designed to localise such breakdowns to the undertaking concerned and prevent a general breakdown of supply to the whole block.
UNDERPASS IN BANGKOK
WORK will begin on a tunnel under the Rajthevi fountain. Bangkok, at the end of March or in early April.
The tunnel is planned to expedite traffic flow at this important junction which is negotiated by 7.800 motor vehicles each hour. The tunnel will be built on Phya Thai Road, instead of Petchburi Road because Phya Thai is a main artery.
The top of the tunnel will be two metres under the road while the height of the tunnel will be five metres, permitting bus travel.
The tunnel will have four lanes, each lane 3.5 metres wide. A safety fence in the middle will divide the op- posing traffic lanes.
The walls of the tunnel will be of permeable material and a water pump will be installed in the centre of the tunnel to pump to the surface water which does collect in the tunnel. A reserve pump will be on hand in case of heavy rain. Water from the tunnel will be drained into Klong Saensab.
Ventilators will be set up to keep the air in the tunnel fresh and free of carbon monoxide. A lighting system will also be set up. The fountain however will not be removed.
