hydraulically operated and is controlled by one technician, using a remote control
system. Its audibility is equivalent only to that of a motor car engine

ticking over (69 decibels at 5 ft.).
In addition, it creates no vibra- tion and can be used in close proxi- mity to existing buildings without danger of damage to foundations. The rate of driving and extraction compares favourably with those for conventional methods.
The machine comprises a power pack, a steel cross head containing eight hydraulic rams with pile con- nector mechanisms. a guide system. and an electrical control system. Two rams are pressurised to thrust down- wards on to the piles to which they are connected, the remaining rams being hydraulically “locked". The reaction against the driving load is obtained from the resistance to uplift of the other piles held by the ma- chine: this reaction being transferred through the locked rams and cross- head.
The initial force available to drive the first pair of piles is the weight of the machine, approximately 9 tons, plus the weight of all the piles con-

nected to it. After the first two piles have been driven, the rams adjacent to them are pressurised. The driving force then available includes the soil frictional restraint on the piles already driven.
PIPELAYER
Can Handle Large Pipes Over Poor Terrain
THE 594, a 385 h.p. pipelayer with 200,000 lb. of lifting capacity at 4 ft. of overhang, has been announced by Caterpillar Tractor Co., Peoria, III. USA. It can handle large diameter pipe over adverse terrain.
Other lift capacities at various over- hangs with a 28 ft. boom are: 100,- 000 lb. at 8 ft.. 50,000 lb. at 16 ft. and 30,000 lb. at 28 ft.
Ground clearance of 25 in. enables the machine to operate in muddy con- ditions. Good floatation is provided by the standard 30 in. track and op- tional 40 in. track.
A non-oscillating equalizer beam provides a solid working platform and longitudinal stability is assured by a special eight roller frame design.
A hydraulically adjusted counter- weight with bottom pivot is fitted. When retracted the counterweight seg- ments swing over the track to mini- mise machine width for ease of manoeuvring and working in close quarters. Extended, they move up and out to provide both high clear- ance and maximum counter balance.
The 594 has powershift transmis- sion giving instantaneous speed and direction changes with one lever. Hook raising speeds are: 1st 12.7 f.p.m., 2nd 26.1 f.p.m., and 3rd 60.7 f.p.m.

WINCHES
New Range With Hydraulic Control
HYDRAULIC Control equipment, en- bling the winch operating console to be placed at up to 30 ft. from the winch it controls, is now being fitted by Henry Sykes Ltd., Univac House. Southwark Street, London, S.E.I. to their new series of TR winches.
The range, which comprises three models with maximum line pull capa- cities of 3 tons. 10 tons and 15 tons, is powered by Lister HB diesel en- gines. With a line load of 3 tons in low gear, the maximum line speed of the TR is 150 f.p.m., while the mo- dels TR2 and TR3, with maximum loads of 10 tons and 15 tons in low gear, both have line speeds from 35 f.p.m. to 45 f.p.m.
In the TR winch range, the output from the diesel engine is to a match- ing torque converter which drives a
