SPRAY GUN

Atomises Paints Without Using Compressed Air

THE Swiss-made Champion Super compressionless electric spray gun is claimed to be capable of atomising viscous or pulpy paints, oils, lacquers, varnishes and polishes as well as or- dinary water paint. It sprays these as a fine film, forming a smooth, even surface.

The spray gun weighs only 3 lb.. but holds enough paint to give unin- terrupted working for a whole day. Atomisation is achieved without mist so that the gun can safely be used continuously indoors. Covering power is such that only one operation is usually sufficient to obtain a satisfac- tory surface.

Spraying may be carried out to any thickness by means of a regulating screen that adjusts the degree of atomisation. There is said to be no danger of runs.

SOIL TESTER

Rapidly Determines Shear Stength

A NEW pocket sized instrument for determining the shear strength of cohesive soils is being marketed by Soiltest, Inc., 2205 Lee Street, Evanston, Ill.. USA. Called the Torvane, the instrument is simple to use and permits the rapid determina- tion of a large number of strength values in short time.

Shear strength can be evaluated using the Torvane on the sides of test pits. on the ends of thin wall tube samples. on standard penetration samples. spoon samples and chunk samples from test pits and backhoe excavations.

The Torvane consists of a 1 in. diameter stainless steel disc which has blades

The its lower surface. on blades are pressed into the soil to be tested. When the knob, which is at- tached to the disc through a precision helical spring, is rotated with finger pressure, a torque is applied to the disc. This torque is resisted by shear stresses in the clay across the lower face and around the circumferential area of the blades.

The calibrated dial converts torque directly into shear stress, read as

per square foot (TSF). The maximum reading on the dial during a test is the shear strength of the soil. The Torvane has a stress range from 0 to 10 TSF.

SUSPENDED CEILING

Vertical Aluminium Panels Clip to Horizontal Supports

RECOMMENDED for use in offices. stores, lobbies and general public areas, the Luxaclair suspended screen ceiling consists of narrow aluminium panels clipped vertically to horizontal aluminium supports. It will fit into any floor plan and, once installed, will diffuse sources of natural or artificial light and will conceal pipes.

The ceiling can connect to standard hangers or adapt easily to suit exist- ing suspension facilities. Neither the carriers nor the panels support com- bustion, and their stove-enamelled

Luxaclair screen ceiling finish makes them easy to clean, as well as resistant to corrosion and rot. in. Suspended approximately 4 apart along the carriers, the panels measure 4 in. high and have standard 16 ft. 4 in. length. Overall height, from the top of the carrier to the bottom of the suspended panels, is 54 in.
