RECAST concrete cruciform frame elements connected by precast edge beams have been used in the construction of a new research and administration centre for H.J. Heinz Co., Ltd., which was completed last year on a 63 acre rural site at Hayes, Middx., UK.

The frame elements, each weighing about 3 tons, are tied together in an unusual way. A duct through each vertical member accommodates a 14 in. diameter Lee McCall bar which

was tensioned as each cruciform ele- ment was erected.

As the joints between the abutting ends of the vertical members occur at eye level where they can be seen from inside the building, it was essen- tial for these to be neat and precise. Tolerances on profile of ± % in. and of 1/16 in. on meeting faces between units were achieved.

The following method of jointing was employed. The top and bottom of the vertical member of each frame
