MASTER plan for the Medical

A Faculty of the University of

Hong Kong concentrates the faculty in the area of Queen Mary Hospital, As a first step the new pathology building was built in 1958 on a site to the west of the hospital.

A further step was taken in 1965 when the preclinical departments were able to move to their Sassoon Road site on the completion of the Li Shu Fan Building (FEA & B, May 1965). The plan will be completed when the clinical departments occupy new pre- mises being provided by Government on the west side of the hospital site.

These buildings provide the basic teaching spaces required by the faculty but not the essential ancillary services necessary for a viable and comprehensive teaching environment. However generous donations of funds by the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club and the China Medical Board Incor- porated have made possible the build- ing of a new medical library and

student centre to make good the de- ficiency.

Opened this month, the centre is designed in two wings with a common entrance. The east wing provides centralised accommodation for the medical library, which was previously housed in the university main library, and the pathology building. The west wing contains residential accommoda- tion for students serving medical clerkships in Queen Mary Hospital, faculty offices and board-room, and a students' canteen.

The library has a large reading room with places for 100 readers and

two floors of book stacks at lower levels, with space for 40,000 books. At present shelving for only half this number is provided, leaving additional temporary space for reading until funds are available to build the two extra floors over the library area, for which the structure has been ade- quately designed.

A catalogue hall and rooms for the assistant librarian in charge and for book repair are also provided.

The residential floors will house 28 students in single rooms and a warden in a small flat. A feature of the office floor is a large faculty board room-
