A NEW type of secondary school re- cently completed at Kwun Tong is the first of five planned by Government for sites in the developing areas of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. It is a secondary technical school, in which the curricula are normal for the secon- dary level but there is an added em- phasis on technical subjects such as mechanical drawing and woodwork.

This new series of schools is being built by Government under its approv- ed policy of providing for the secon- dary age group the full technical courses which aided bodies are not able to sponsor. The aim is to prepare young people for industrial jobs in places like Kwai Chung, Yau Tong and Chai Wan, and to create a reservoir of skilled technicians needed by an ex- panding industry.

Much of the materials and design work for the Kwun Tong school will be used as criteria for future secondary schools of this type, one item which has proved particularly successful be- ing the use of hydraulically pressed cement-wood blocks imported from England for areas of abnormal wear such as the assembly hall and work- shop floors.
