BORER

A Russian-designed pneumatic boring machine is being distributed by the British firm, Wogau-Brameast Trading Ltd., 9 Kingsway, London, W.C.2.

Constructed in nickel-steel, it is similar in appearance to a small rocket and contains a compressed-air-driven piston that forces the whole body for- ward through soil to act as a pile, com- pressing the soil to the front and sides. and leaving behind a practically straight hole with smooth consolidated walls.

Called the Magic Mole, it measures 1.5 m. long and tapers in diameter from 250 to 135 mm. It weighs 85 kg., operates on an air pressure of 6 kg. per

sq. cm., and has a recommended maxi- mum horizontal or inclined hole- boring length of 50 m.

During operation, air from a com- pressor or main air pipeline enters the Mole through a rubber-canvas hose at the tail end and, after operating the reciprocating striking pin, discharges through apertures at the base of the connecting pipe.

Two expansion cones can be locat- ed on a collar to the rear of the body if holes of a specific diameter are to be bored.

CONCRETE SAW

Stow Manufacturing Co., 627 Shear Street, Binghampton, New York, has started production of a new lightweight concrete saw, the model CS 801.

It is powered by an 8 h.p. recoil starter Briggs & Stratton engine, weighs 150 lb. and cuts up to Sin. deep with a 14in. blade. The power to cut is transmitted to the blade by use of a three-band belt which is like using three V-belts at once and provides non-slip transmission under tough conditions.

A hinged blade guard allows cut- ting right up to walls. Other features include an all-brass water attachment assembly, a folding guide bar for fol- lowing a chalk line and a handle- mounted depth of cut indicator.

SUMP PUMP

For sump and cellar drainage in places where there is a rapid and re- peated rise and fall

in liquid levels, Da- vis Wayne have de- veloped a new sump pump with fully au- tomatic level sens- ing and switchgear for completely in- dependent opera- tion.

The pump body is a casting which combines suction and delivery outlet in unit construc- tion. The impeller is abrasion resistant and mounted on a stainless steel shaft. Sleeve bearings are water cooled and require no additional lubrication.

Sump pump

The pump is powered by a heavy duty 4 h.p. motor controlled by

micro-switches. Thermal protection devices are in-built and switching is controlled by level sensing floats. The design incorporates an integral strainer and open throat impeller to eliminate suction choking. A vertical discharge pipe simplifies installation and keeps the overall dimensions to a minimum.

The makers are Davis Wayne Heat- ing Equipment Ltd., Fort Brockhurst Industrial Estate, Gosport, Hants., UK.

LOADER

Improved performance and faster loading and dumping are claimed for a new 3 cu. yd. wheel loader introduced by WABCO Construction Equipment Division, 2301 N.E. Adams Street, Peoria, Ill., USA.

A four-wheel drive, articulated loader, the Model 300 can obtain cap- acity loads at ground level through the use of a 55-degree bucket roll-back. Centre-pin steering combined with two-axle oscillation gives more com- fort for the driver and also reduces torsional stress on the hinge pins and frame assembly.

The power unit may be a Detroit diesel of 185 b.h.p. or a Cummins die-

sel of 180 b.h.p. Power is transferred to the wheels through a three-speed full-reversing power shift transmission and torque converter, with speeds up to 21.6 m.p.h.

Optional equipment includes a roll- out bucket that permits a maximum dump height of 13ft. 4in., and light duty and general purpose type buc- kets.

STONE DRESSER

The SDR 2 compressed air driven stone dressing rig developed by Atlas Copco AB, Stockholm, Sweden, is fit- ted with a suction device for the re- moval of stone dust.

During operation, the stone dust is sucked away by two ejectors directly
