Play space at ground floor level

the longer of the two blocks and this arrangements affords the largest pos- sible open playground on the central and southern part of the site.

The longer arm of the L contains all the classrooms which face north. Access to the classrooms is by open corridors on the south side, between the classrooms and the playground. The shorter arm has a north-south location and contains all the special rooms, the administrative offices and the staff quarters on the top floor.

Interior of the fan-shaped auditorium

A building grid of 12ft. 6in. was adopted throughout the school blocks. Special rooms occupy a multiple of the basic grid, while classrooms oc- cupy the space of two grids.

Further covered playground space is provided at ground level beneath the auditorium and beneath the two multi- storey blocks.

All the special rooms have a stand- ard width of 22ft. The library and laboratories measure 50 ft. long, as does the lecture room which has a

staggered floor between the fifth and sixth levels. Art room, handicraft room and geography room measure 37ft. 6in. long.

Structurally the buildings are in situ slab and beam compositions on spread footings. The largest span in the auditorium is 84 ft. where a rectan- gular beam section of 18in. x 58in. was required.
