TRACTOR SHOVEL

Foot Control for Steering, Speed and Brakes

A NEW 3 cu. yd. unit designed for bank sloping, stockpile work and base- ment excavation has been added to the range of tractor shovels made by Allis-Chalmers, Milwaukee, Wis..

USA.

This Model HD-12G is powered by a diesel engine which develops 184 h.p. at the flywheel. It has powerful hydraulic cylinders and dual pumps which work together to supply a high

volume of oil at low pressures.

The

3 cu. yd. bucket is recommended for heaped loads of 3,000 lb cu.yd. ma- terial. Other buckets are available for heavier or lighter materials.

The machine is fitted with a modu- lated clutch which gives the operator complete and precise foot control of

the vehicle's travel speed under all job conditions. He steers, brakes and controls travel speed with his feet, having his left hand free to operate the transmission control lever and his right hand free to operate the bucket control. A power shift transmission is provided with single lever control for speed and direction changes.

Both the steering clutches and brakes are oil-cooled and lubricated. The track recoil mechanism is fully enclosed to prevent dirt and rock from entering. All track and support rollers are permanently lubricated and have tapered roller bearings.

Allis-Chalmers agents include: Asoke Motors, and Jardine Waugh Ltd., Bangkok: The Earnshaws Docks and Honolulu Ironworks, Manila: Jardine Waugh, Ltd., Singapore; and Jardine Engineering Corp. Ltd., Hong Kong.

EXCAVATOR

Track-mounted, Hydraulically Operated Machine

CRANE manufacturers, Thomas Smith & Sons (Rodley) Ltd., Rodley, Leeds, UK. have extended their large range of machines to include the H14 hydraulic excavator.

Power unit for the H14 is a Lister HB4 air-cooled diesel, developing 52 b.p.h. at 2,000 r.p.m. The flywheel end power take-off drives the slewing and travelling motions and the for- ward power take-off drives a hydrau- lic pump for the digging mechanism. A feature of the H14 is that slewing and travelling can be carried out in- dependently of digging-arm mano-

euvres.

The crawler frame consists of a circular turret incorporating the roller path, mounted on a heavy cross gir- der connected to twin channel out- riggers for the crawler belt assemb- ly. Steering is by multi-tooth preci- sion-cut jaw clutches and large-dia- meter brakes, controlled by a single hand-lever.

Average ground pressure is 4.75 lb. p.s.i. with 21 in. wide track pads, and 4.1 lb p.s.i. with 24 in. pads.

Operating controls are veniently group so that the driver can control the whole digging cycle through two hand levers and two
