REINFORCEMENT
Device Splices Bars Without Welding or Overlapping
THE G-LOC mechanical splicing de- vice makes it possible for column- reinforcing bars to be butted together and quickly joined without the need for lapped or welded connections.
Requiring a 4 lb. sledge hammer for installation, the splice can hold a 25 to 30 ft. long free-standing bar in a vertical position without any fur- ther support. Although primarily de- signed for transmitting vertical bear- ing loads, it also provides sufficient tensile continuity in any section of the column, if staggered in position relative to adjacent bars.
The main component of the splice takes the form of a galvanised-metal sleeve, perforated with several inspec- tion holes and split from top to bot- tom by a wedge-shaped opening with flanged edges. It is used in conjunc- tion with a channelled metal wedge. somewhat longer than the sleeve, that dovetails over the flanges on the sleeve opening and pulls them tightly together around the bars to be joined.
Before a joint can be made, the two bars to be connected must be ac- curately saw cut at 90 deg. to their longitudinal axes, to a tolerance of 2 deg. A splice sleeve can then be slip- ped over the bar already in place

and the upper bar positioned so that it aligns with the lower one. After the sleeve has been raised so that its middle inspection hole is centred over the joint, the metal wedge is fitted over the flanges on the sleeve open- ing and pulled downwards until tight.

The hammer is then used to drive the wedge home. In addition to its speed of installation this process has the advantage of allowing the curacy of the joint to be inspected visually. Four standard splice sizes. designated as G-8, G-9, G-10 and G- 11, are available for bars with dia- meters of 1, 1%, 11⁄4 and 1% in. respectively.

LIME STAINING
Primer Prevents Marks on New Buildings
LIME staining on new buildings, particularly in tropical climates, can now be overcome with Prime Lime, a specialised primer made by Blundell- Permoglaze Ltd., 37 Queen Square. London, W.C.1.
Prime Lime is said to have been proved under extreme humidity and temperatures in S.E. Asia and West Africa.
Unsightly lime staining is caused during drying out of newly built walls when lime-in-solution (calcium hy- drate) permeates to the surface. It re- acts with atmospheric carbon dioxide
15 months exposure with (left) and without Prime Lime
to form deposits of calcium carbon- ate. These white or grey patches are insoluble so they cannot be washed off.
Prime lime has been developed as a barrier to the lime content in most cements, plasters and surfacers, but
permits drying out of moisture. The porous paint film allows water vapour to permeate, but not lime-in-solution.
By controlling the drying out rate the primer also almost completely prevents hairline cracking a com- mon fault resulting from lime plaster shrinkage when drying out is too rapid. Directly a new wall is surface dry. Prime Lime can be applied by brush. Only one coat is needed and dries in 1 2 hours. Emulsion or latex paint can be applied immediate- ly.

STEEL RULE
Tape May be Locked in Position
STANLEY are marketing a 16 ft. Powerlock steel tape rule with a con- trol slide which is easily locked with the thumb to keep the extended steel blade from creeping back into the case. When the blade is unlocked, it retracts smoothly and automatically.
A snap-on belt clip is attached to the back of the case, and the rule user can measure while the tape rule is attached to his belt.
The bright yellow blade, with black foot-and-inch markings, is easy to read. It is clad in polyester film which resists most oils, acids and alkalis. The true zero hook at the
