A restaurant will top the 230 ft. tall structure. The floors will utilise giant Tee-beams, 122 ft. long, canti- levering from the concrete core.

Architect for the building is Mr. Bernard Rothzeid, and the consulting engineer is Mr. Morris Schupack.

Eight-storey Apartment Block Ready in 40 Days

An eight-storey building with 80 three-room apartments at present under construction in Malmo, South Sweden, is due to be completed in 40 days with the aid of four men and one crane.

The building is being erected according to a new method based on the use of large prefabricated sections and apartment units developed by Swedish contractors Skanska Cementgjuteriet. Whole units such as bathrooms, staircases and the elevator shafts are being put in place with the aid of what is reported to be Sweden's tallest crane. Each storey contains ten three-room apartments. Two apartments with staircase are put up a day.

The wall and floor elements are of room size in order to eliminate joints. Electric wiring and all tubing are cast into the elements in the factory. The system is considered an important step in the development of industrialised .building.

Computer Programme for Analysis of Reinforced Sections

COMPUTING service centres are being set up in Britain with the authority of the Ministry of Transport which has now approved the first computer programme to be offered. Developed by ICT Computing Services Division, the programme is for the structural analysis of biaxially-loaded reinforced concrete columns, beams and footings. Basic- ally, it only requires the definition of the cross-section of the column or foundation footing, whether this be solid, hollow or discontinuous; any shape is permissible and it can handle structures such as lift shafts and chimneys.

From a description of the cross-section and any rein- forcement, the programme calculates the stress in each steel bar and the stress at each corner of the cross-section remaining in compression. These stresses are printed out by the computer, together with the corresponding "load factors" ratios of actual stress to allowable stress.

Cost of using the programme is about £5 for the first loading case, with subsequent calculations on the same run costing about £1_5s., depending upon the com- plexity of the section. Further details are obtainable from ICT, 68 Newman Street, London, W.1.
